Why Export?

Exporting offers one of the few opportunities for Hawke’s Bay businesses to significantly add value to the region’s economy. While getting established as an exporter is not easy, particularly with the recent changes in the exchange rate, businesses can become successful exporters with good advice, planning and focused support. Export Hawke's Bay is working to achieve a significant increase in local exports.

If New Zealand is to maintain or improve its standard of living more companies need to export. While not all products will find an overseas market there are many examples where exporting is the only option, as is the case with New Zealand’s burgeoning wine industry.

Here are some sobering statistics to consider:

  • In NZ just 151 companies generate almost 80% of merchandise exports
  • Only 270 Hawke’s Bay businesses currently export
  • More than 80% of income in European countries results from exports. In NZ and Australia the figure is less than 25%
  • In Australia only 4% of companies export
  • In Australia 1 in 5 jobs depend on exports. In regional areas, the figure is 1 in 4 jobs

The world is constantly changing and many new exporting opportunities are opening up for New Zealand businesses. For example, barriers to trade are gradually reducing and information and communication technologies are simplifying the world into a series of time zones. This is an opportunity as much as a threat and allows New Zealand businesses to operate globally without having to move offshore.

It is important for New Zealanders not to be limited by their natural modesty. There are many examples of Kiwis being world leaders and world beaters. Here are some innovative and internationally competitive Hawke’s Bay owned and operated companies:

Wood Mallets - polo mallets & cricket bats
SirTrack - electronic animal tracking technology
Te Mata Estate - premium wine
Rissington Breedline - sheep and cattle genetics
Brownrigg Agriculture - Wagyu live cattle
Rush Munro - gourmet ice cream
Village Press - olive oil
ABB - power disaster protection products
