Why E4E?

Education in the 21st century must go beyond the simple acquisition of knowledge. Students now need to be provided with realistic and practical applications of their learning as rapid change accompanies the constant stream of new technology, reaching out to all areas of the globe.

Students of today and the future will be globally mobile, requiring of them the ability to change and adapt their knowledge and skills to suit a broad range of situations. This skill needs to be developed and honed over time as students move through their education with opportunities to experience their learning in authentic, relevant contexts.

E4E is about giving young people the opportunity to develop the skills, competencies, understandings and attributes which will equip them to be innovative and to identify, create, initiate and successfully manage personal, business, work and community opportunities.

Students need to recognise it will be essential to commit to lifelong learning and developing their capabilities. They need to be skilled, educated and able to contribute fully to communities (local, national and global) while meeting the changing needs of the workplace and the economy.

The Values and Key Competencies, as set out in the New Zealand Curriculum, gain increasing significance for students as they appreciate that these are requirements they will need for successful living and working.

Values and Key Competences:

  • Thinking
  • Using language, symbols and texts
  • Managing self
  • Relating to others
  • Participating and contributing
