Business Awards Gala Dinner moved to One Night Only location
The iconic British American Tobacco Building is re-opening its doors for “one night only” to celebrate with the best businesses in Hawke’s Bay.

The Westpac Hawke’s Bay Chamber of Commerce Business Awards, the region’s premier business event, will hold its gala awards dinner inside the Art Deco building on November 6.
Ray and Tom McKimm of Big Save Furniture and Damon Harvey of Attn! marketing pr came up with the idea to host the event when they were looking at how to invite the public to mark the end of an era for the former factory.
“We walked through the grand entrance and then through to the factory which is packed full of remnants from its past life as a tobacco factory and we immediately saw its potential as a special and unique venue for the awards.
“This will be the first time an event like this will be held in the building in its original glory.
“Not only is the building an historical landmark but is chocker full of memorabilia right down to the smell of tobacco - it will be like walking through a museum,” Mr Harvey said.
Big Save recently purchased over 4.5 hectares of land and buildings in the inner port suburb and relocated its North Island distribution centre from Auckland. It has further development plans which will be announced in early November.
Hawke’s Bay Chamber of Commerce chief executive Murray Douglas said venue offer was “just too good to refuse” and the event will now be special for several reasons.
“Hawke’s Bay is celebrating 150 years as a region and this is a perfect opportunity to celebrate business achievements over the last 150 years.
“The Chamber of Commerce is also celebrating 125 years, so it’s great that we have secured such a magnificent building that has played a part in the development of business in the region.
“The buildings use as a factory may now be over but the new owners should be commended for looking at its potential for redevelopment and over the next few years we’ll see many businesses relocating or launching their new businesses here,” Mr Douglas said.
Tickets are already in very strong demand, with more than 450 sold so far and Mr Douglas is now expecting even more people being part of a special night.
“The size of the venue allows us to cater for a large turnout.”
